Set Up / Organisation

40 x 30 yard playing area, with 4 mini goals in each corner. 2 teams set up as attack (Blue) v defence (Yellow), with central area for possession to be played through (30×20). Objective is to work the 4 Yellows defensively in a diamond, against a Blue overload with 3 central and 2 wide players, creating a 5 v 4. Both teams able to score 1 touch in directional practice.

Key Coaching Point | Forcing Direction

If Blues have ball in wide area, all Yellows must be on that side of the pitch. Defensive Shape.

Key Coaching Point 2 | Actions on Winning Possession

Diamond Yellows must now ensure they stop ball into ST, forcing play across and backwards. Compactness, which allows Yellows to regain and counter quickly or keep possession and build to finish.

Progression 1 | Add ST to Defend Against

Change formation to add a striker which forces defenders to rethink how they press and force direction in the defensive phase. 

Progression 2 | Opposition Rotation

All Blues can now rotate inside and outside, creating a numerical advantage for Yellows to deal with
Key Coaching Points
  • As a defensive practice in the main, we must ensure the attacking quality is at the level it needs to be in order to work the defenders. Focus on the shape, to begin with and ensure both teams are applying standard attacking and defensive principles before developing additional points.

    Space | Focus on space between players, ensuring gaps are at a minimum in central areas, develop players ability to slide and press quickly in relation to the movement of the ball

    Time | Set time objectives to remain compact and not allow them a shot on goal in 15 seconds for example. Could develop counter if need be (score in 6 seconds)

    Equipment | Ensure balls provided quickly to maintain the tempo of practice. Balls in goals so when they score they have 3 seconds to start from own end, if they don’t goal get’s chalked off. TEMPO

    Players | Develop individual ability by focusing on 2-3 players throughout.

    Pre-plan defenders to develop, maybe midfield 4 diamond pressure or 2 CBs organising in front and set individual objectives

    Advanced | We can clearly focus on many aspects of this Attack v Defence game, with an ability to also develop transition for defending the team, yet try to focus on a specific aspect, i.e. Diamond movement out of possession. It becomes easy to sway off topic, so try to stay focused, whilst maintaining challenge from opposition doing the right things to test players.

Set Up / Objectives

This skill practice builds on the Man City ‘Overloads In Advanced Areas‘ theme, developing our previous Technical passing practice (46-P1). Here we have 2 v 1 in both deeper and advanced areas, with a 1 v 1 in the central zone. Objective is for 2 defenders to combine in 1 or 2 touches to play into central player.

Central player can only move into wider zone after pass has been made (unopposed), emphasising weight of pass and timing of run. Central player must then play forward into 2 attacking players (2 v 1) who must score in 2 passes in one of 2 mini goals. If the defending team wins the ball, can they score in mini goal as a 3?

This shows how units can create pocket overloads to break defensive lines in the midfield and attacking thirds. We can see from this situation between City and Chelsea during the 2017-2018 Season, how Pep attempts to create an overload in the half spaces (pockets).

We can view the area of the pitch in which this session would be positioned, placing the practice into context for both players and coaches. Our number 10 (De Bruyne) in the example drops into the space, and Silva (11) makes run in behind.

Zoom In | Quick Combination Play

A closer look shows clearly the passing options in possession and the challenge faced by defenders. Focus on creating space to play forward and movement into spaces to receive advance. Possible progressions could include the 10 is now opposed and so will have to wriggle out of trouble in central areas and 10 and 11 can rotate with 11 dropping off the shoulder to receive in central zone space to play forward.. Be creative!

Practice 5 works on individual player’s movement to lose what would be opposition to receive, move the ball and finish quickly. In addition we include finishing and movement practices to enable players to combine these different elements.

Key Coaching Points 1: Movement to receive

Focus on movement off the angle of the pole, check shoulders to develop the habit to check for defenders who will you press you in games and take ball out of your feet on 1 touch to attack space and finish.

Progression 1: Physical Focus (Power / Speed)

After shot, player must sprint to corner and jump hurdles two footed to develop power, before sprinting through ladders using quick feet and then sprint through to the end pole.

We will be hoping to get a piece of individual content out to players each day that can be applied away from training.

Get comfortable working on both feet bouncing passes off the wall at different angles so you are able to take your first touch out in front of you before finishing into corners. Challenge yourself and set timings if you are happy with your technique to challenge yourself under pressure and add some competitiveness to motivate. 

We can introduce ladders, poles or cones to add a physical component into your practice, depending on what aspect of your physical you wish to develop. This example shows how you can use hurdles for plyometrics with bounces for power and ladders for quick feet to improve speed.

This Technical practice is played in a 36 x 36 yard area, broken down into 4 x 4 squares, with 3 or 4 teams of 4 creating effective supporting angles, and movement, whilst unopposed. Objective is for each team to simply move the ball around the area whilst avoiding other players in the area, and developing an understanding of how to rotate with teammates during this phase.

Key Coaching Points: Receive on the Move

Players must now receive a pass in another area to where they are as pass is played. This will slow play down, yet will encourage players to think about weight of pass and verbal and non verbal cues will be more important with this progression.

Progression 1: Rotational Movement

We can progress this by allowing two players to support the striker, with a defender now active on their first touch, 1 recovering defender will create a 3 v 2 situation. Ensure we rotate attackers and defenders throughout the practice.

Progression 2: 
Players must now rotate with another player in a different square after they have played the pass. This will encourage players off the ball not to just focus on receiving the next pass, but on the movement to create space with passing player.
