Organisation/Set Up

In this Opposed Skill Practice, we aim to develop Final Third Combinations to create and exploit space in these areas to create chances. Two directional practice | 45 x 40 (adults) area split into 2 halves as shown. 14 Players consisting of 2 groups of 3 v 3 together with a GK. Objective is for players to score in 3 v 3s, using safe zone to be patient and recycle the ball, allowing movement to create space.

Progression 1: Floater Drive (4 v 3)

Floater can join in to attack and create a 4 v 3 overload in the attacking half., with a supporting defender to support in the floater channel. This will encourage more angles and opportunities to be created with challenge increased for the defending team.  

Key Point for Coach Focus

Different combinations to be created from various angles, with a focus on depth and width of players to ensure space is being used effectively. Recognise when to speed up attacks when space creates itself in and around goal, not afraid to take the opportunity with quick shots

Additional Support

Focus on initial passing quality and movement off the ball to keep possession before transferring.

Angles and distances of floating player and single player to finish is crucial with underload.

Movement to lose opposition and player-to-player understanding is important to finish. Quick Finishing technique with individuals.

Set Up

This is practice 1 in Theme 21 and is focused on developing quick combinations around the box with one touch play, pull backs and 1-2 combinations to a finish. We also include quick feet exercises which are relevant for this situation in game play, together with a progression to finish at the opposite end. This will encourage players to react quickly and not ball watch after performing any action.

Set Up / Objectives

This skill practice builds on the Man City ‘Overloads In Advanced Areas‘ theme, developing our previous Technical passing practice (46-P1). Here we have 2 v 1 in both deeper and advanced areas, with a 1 v 1 in the central zone. Objective is for 2 defenders to combine in 1 or 2 touches to play into central player.

Central player can only move into wider zone after pass has been made (unopposed), emphasising weight of pass and timing of run. Central player must then play forward into 2 attacking players (2 v 1) who must score in 2 passes in one of 2 mini goals. If the defending team wins the ball, can they score in mini goal as a 3?

Key Objectives

This shows how units can create pocket overloads to break defensive lines in the midfield and attacking thirds. We can see from this situation between City and Chelsea during the 2017-2018 Season, how Pep attempts to create an overload in the half spaces (pockets).

We can view the area of the pitch in which this session would be positioned, placing the practice into context for both players and coaches. Our number 10 (De Bruyne) in the example drops into the space, and Silva (11) makes run in behind.

Zoom In | Quick Combination Play

A closer look shows clearly the passing options in possession and the challenge faced by defenders. Focus on creating space to play forward and movement into spaces to receive advance. Possible progressions could include the 10 is now opposed and so will have to wriggle out of trouble in central areas and 10 and 11 can rotate with 11 dropping off the shoulder to receive in central zone space to play forward.. Be creative!

Organisation / Set Up

This Dribbling practice requires at least 5 players in a 15 yard diameter circle area, with each player beginning with a ball each to dribble. Players encouraged to be creative and try as many tricks and dribbles as they can unopposed to begin with before introducing various obstacles and challenges.

Progression 1: Add 2 Areas

Add 2 areas, where players must perform a different trick and with increased traffic closer control is encouraged.

Progression 2: Add Defender

Add a defender to add pressure to dribblers, so they must avoid each other as well as perform a dribble in area.

Progression 3: Passing Floater 

With increased difficulty with added defender, a floater could act as a wall pass for dribblers under pressure.

Key Coaching Points 1: Movement to receive

Focus on movement off the angle of the pole, check shoulders to develop the habit to check for defenders who will you press you in games and take ball out of your feet on 1 touch to attack space and finish.

Progression 1: Physical Focus (Power / Speed)

After shot, player must sprint to corner and jump hurdles two footed to develop power, before sprinting through ladders using quick feet and then sprint through to the end pole.

For older players, think about how these skills can link to their game in whatever position players play in. It’s important that skills are transferrable to the game where they can be applied in a game situaton.
