Counter Attacking - Opposed / SSG (1002-S1)

Football Practice Set Up:

1. Opposed Skill Practice:

This Counter Attacking Practice is set as shown, with a 30 x 30 Yard area in which to work, as well as a 15 x 15 area at the top of the pitch for players to keep possession. There are 3 goals, 1 main goal protected by a goalkeeper and 2 mini goals for players to score into. We have a floating player from which possession team can bounce ball into to score quickly.

Objective here is for 3 Whites to make 10 passes before breaking out via floater to score and for 2 Reds to regain possession to pass into ST (marked by a DF) and break out to combine and score in a 2 v 1.

Touchtight Soccer Practice Tips

This can be a great practice to encourage various types of counter attacking, especially quick combination counter attacks in small spaces. Coaches can focus on the speed of the counter and in particular the importance of player decisions. When regaining possession, players must break quickly and be decisive with their final pass and finishing in dangerous attacking positions.

2. Small Sided Game:

This Small Sided Game is played in a 30 x 30 Yard area, with a goal and Goalkeeper at each end and 4 v 4 in pitch area. Objective is for players to develop quick counter attacks through effective defending and then make full use of overloads and spaces created. Could encourage immediate counter through start position, or allow to free flow and focus on coaching Whites to press high and Whites to keep possession.

Touchtight Soccer Practice Tips

As a coach, we encourage and manipulate counter attacks for the group we are coaching in many ways. Here are a few:

1. Condition Whites to regain possession in 6 seconds or a goal is conceded (High Pressure conditions)

2. If Whites score they must defend their goal for a minute or their previous goal gets wiped off (encourages defending deep and quick counter)

3. Reds to make 10-15 passes to score a goal before attacking for a second goal (increasing chances of regaining possession).
